Transformation of a Rubble filled dumping ground to a Heritage Park.

The pandemic made me visit to this beautiful  hidden 16th century Mughal garden , and the experience was just amazing. The 90 acre park  lying on the Mughal-era  Grand Trunk road is the  amalgamation of  Persian style gardens, forest, historic structures and various nursery functions.

HISTORY OF THE GARDEN

In Mughal era Sunder Nursery adjacent to Humayun Tomb was known as Azim Bagh ,built          initially as the resting place of several Sufi saints. Then came the Britishers from Calcutta to            Delhi and established a nursery there for experimenting the imported trees and other sacred              plants to be used in the newly built capital's roads and gardens.

Later in 1940 Central Work Public Department acquired and used for same purpose. In 2007,          under the Urban Renewal Initiative ,implemented by Aga Khan Trust for Culture(AKTC) in  partnership with the Archaeological Survey of India started the conservation, restoration of the garden. While the Eminent landscape Architect Mohammad Shaheer redesigned the garden.
